THE organisers of a festive fund-raiser hope to get 1,000 Santas out on the streets for the Santathon.

Mayor of Worcester Coun Andy Roberts and the official charity mascot Bertie Bloodcell launched the fun run at the Guildhall yesterday.

Last year 800 people took part in the event in aid of the Worcester-based charity Leukaemia CARE, but this year even more Santas are expected. The event, now in its seventh year, is scheduled to start at Worcester City Football Club on Sunday, December 6, at 11am.

Santas will make their way around a course through the streets of Worcester. Simultaneous Santathons will take place at Evesham High School and Dagenham and Redbridge football club.

Nick Martin, Leukaemia CARE spokesman, said: “The Santathon isn’t about how fast you can get round the course, it’s about having fun, getting involved in a community event and raising money.”

Santa outfits are included in the registration fee and there is a prize for the most sponsorship. Entry and sponsorship forms are available from Leukaemia CARE or from the charity’s website at xmasfunrun.co.uk.
