FRESH local produce will attract foodies to Worcester city centre this weekend.

The new Worcester city farmers’ market will open in Angel Place on Sunday.

It is hoped that the prominent position of a bustling market will encourage residents to buy more local produce and draw in visitors from across the area.

The market will be held on the third Sunday of every month from 9am to 3pm.

This weekend there will be more than 30 stallholders selling a range of goods from meat, fruit and bread to ciders, preserves and plants.

With the existing farmers’ market being held at the former Royal Worcester Porcelain site in Severn Street on the first Sunday of each month, people will soon be able to buy direct from Worcestershire farmers every fortnight.

Henry Wormington, chairman of Worcestershire Farmers’ Market Group, said members have been working to establish a city centre market for many years.

He said: “I am delighted to secure this location in the centre of the city, and would urge anyone interested in fresh, local produce and supporting their local farmers to come along and find out what farmers’ markets are all about.

“Shoppers can talk to the stallholders to find out all about their products, try samples of the goods on offer, and feel confident that they are helping to support the prosperity of their local rural economy.

“Our goods are not over-packaged, and as all of our produce comes from within 30 miles of the market, people will be helping the environment by cutting down on food miles too.”

The Worcester city farmers’ market has been jointly organised by CrownGate shopping centre, Bray Associates, VisitWorcester and the Worcestershire Farmers’ Market Group.
