HALF-term holidays and what to do with the children? Barely do they seem to have returned to class after the over-long summer break than they’re home again.

So to get them out of their bedrooms and off the computer, how about enrolling them on the Young Countryside Day organised by the Countryside Alliance at Throckmorton Clay Shooting Club, near Pershore on Tuesday, October 27. The day – the fourth to be organised by the CA – is an opportunity for youngsters aged 11 to 16 to enjoy the great outdoors and learn about the rural way of life.

The aim is really twofold. First, it hopes to introduce young people who may have only seen a fish or a ferret in a book or on a television screen to the real thing. In other words, show how the rural way of life works to those who may have had little or no contact with it so far.

Secondly, for those who do live in the countryside, it’s a chance to have a go at activities they may not yet have been able to try.

Clare Rowson, the Countryside Alliance’s Midlands regional director, said: “Students will learn about the important role that country pursuits play in rural life, explore the links with conservation and get hands-on experience of various shooting disciplines; fly tying for fishing, falconry and ferreting among others.

“The aim of the day is to offer young people the opportunity to experience countryside pursuits and enhance their appreciation of the countryside and its people.

“The countryside is for everyone.

We all love it and we want to be able to help people understand the rural way of life.”

A team of fully-qualified and accredited instructors will be accompanying the students together with at least one team leader for each group.

Protective equipment will be provided where necessary.

Worcestershire Countryside Alliance chairman Audrey Steel said: “Britain’s treasured landscape is managed and farmed because of the communities who live and work there. Today’s countryside must embrace change but we must also ensure it does not become the victim of inappropriate meddling.

“The countryside is like a jigsaw puzzle. All the pieces are needed to make the picture complete and our Young Countryside Day will at least introduce some of those to young people.”

Numbers are limited so advance booking only will guarantee a place.and a £10 donation is required to help towards the cost of equipment.
