A MAN more than twice the legal alcohol limit drove to the city’s hospital after hearing of his uncle’s attempted suicide.
Alexander Davies, aged 20, was driving his mother’s car while drunk and without insurance when he was stopped in the car park at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Police were tipped off by the hospital’s security staff who reported seeing a group of drunken men and women searching for their parked car in the early hours of Tuesday, September 1.
A breath test showed Davies, of Winston Close, Ledbury, had 93mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg. He also had a £10 bag of crack cocaine in his coat pocket.
Gary Harper, in mitigation, said worries over his uncle’s health had “clouded his judgement”.
“His uncle was in intensive care following a failed suicide attempt,” he said.
The court was told Davies father had also taken his own life in Christmas 2008.
For drink driving he was given a 12-month community order, ordered to do the drink impaired drivers programme and banned from driving for 24 months.
For having no insurance he was given six points on his licence, ordered to pay a £200 fine, £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. He was also fined £80 for drugs possession.
