A KIND-hearted great grandmother who has battled breast cancer twice was the first person to buy a calendar to raise money for a dedicated breast unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
When 81-year-old Ada White heard a calendar was being produced to raise money for the unit in Newtown Road, she pre-ordered a copy straight away and bought another for her son, John, who lives in Devon.
Mrs White of Winchester Avenue, St John’s, Worcester, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989 and again 17 years later in 2007. She wanted to give as much support as she could to the Worcester News-backed charity appeal.
The first time she battled cancer she had a lump removed while she was a patient at what used to be the Worcester Royal Infirmary on Castle Street. The second time she had to have a mastectomy at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
She has raised hundreds for the cause with her own fund-raising initiatives like competitions, raffles and sales and says if she can help, so can Worcester News readers.
The Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign is the adopted charity of your Worcester News and we will back the campaign until the £2.5 million needed to convert the building into a breast unit has been raised.
Mrs White bought the calendar because her friend, Linda Cooke, a nurse practitioner in breast services at the hospital, the calendar girl for March.
Mrs White said: “I am interested in helping this cause because I have had breast cancer myself – twice. They have also been so kind to me here. They saved my life. The staff are all wonderful.
“Linda has been like a daughter to me and Steven Thrush, the consultant, is like a son. He put me at ease when I came here in 2007. All the women in the calendar are brave and wonderful women.”
The calendar features revealing but tasteful photographs of breast cancer patients, campaigners and medics.
Mrs White, who has one son, three grandchildren and one great grandchild said she is looking forward to seeing the new unit and it will make patients’ lives easier.
She said: “The new unit is all going to be in one place and you won’t have to go miles for treatment.” To get a copy of the calendar, which costs £6, e-mail calendar@everybodyknowssomebody.co.uk and you will receive an automated response telling you where you can get a copy.
