A FLOWER could help a breast unit campaign to blossom thanks to a charity scheme run by a garden centre.
Staff at Webbs Garden Centre in Wychbold, near Droitwich are supporting the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign with the sale of a unique pink poinsettia.
Your Worcester News is supporting the appeal to create a new £2.5 million dedicated breast unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.
The plant, called a princettia, is new and differs from the traditional Christmas favourite which is usually red or white. Poinsettias have never been produced for the summer before.
Webbs staff hope the plants will fly off the shelves and £1 from every sale will go to the local charity.
Carole Crowe, Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign co-ordinator said: “We are delighted that such a well-respected local company, Webbs, is supporting our appeal in this way.
“The princettia is a lovely way to help us raise funds and we would encourage lots of people to go out and buy the plant.”
Webbs executive chairman, Ed Webb, said: “Our customers and staff at Webbs have a great track record of supporting local charities. Everybody knows somebody who has faced breast cancer and we are very pleased to help raise funds for such a worthwhile cause that will benefit local people.”
The princettia, which will cost £5.99 and be presented in a gift bag, is exclusive to Webbs.
Within Worcestershire Royal Hospital, there is no area specifically for breast patients.
The aim of the campaign is to build a dedicated unit to ensure rapid access, assessment and treatment for breast problems.
The unit will be created at 220 Newtown Road in Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Consultant Steven Thrush says it will mean the service is more efficient, cutting patient waiting times from three/four hours to an hour and a half.
The centre will also have 30 dedicated car parking spaces. It is hoped work on the new unit, now offices used by managerial staff, could begin within 18 months and it is the unit itself could be finished within three years if the money is raised quickly enough.
