UPDATE: May 15 - all bags are almost gone!
GOODBYE plastic bag, hello eco-friendly jute.
Your Worcester News is giving away 5,000 natural carrier bags as part of our Buy Local campaign.
The strong, durable, biodegradable bags are made of natural jute fibre and have been produced by Broadway-based firm Jutexpo.
The bags are available at newsagents and independent stores across Worcestershire, as listed below.
To claim yours simply cut out the coupon in the paper and hand it to staff. You will be given your free bag in return, while stocks last.
Experts estimate that reducing the number of plastic bags in use by just 25 per cent would eliminate 58,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year – the equivalent of taking 18,000 cars off the road.
Our Buy Local bag is made from jute, a natural and renewable plant harvested and processed by traditional methods in India to make jute fabric. It is strong, but durable and biodegradable.
The inks used for the Buy Local logo are water-based, non-toxic pigments and the handles are made with cotton webbing, filled with cotton rope.
Jutexpo’s operations and compliance director Sam Turner said: “The bags are all made by hand, within our factory, employing over 1,500 employees.
“Each stage – cutting out the panels, screen printing, stitching and finishing – is done using a traditional method that hasn’t changed for many years.
“These bags help support the wider jute industry, which employs over 4m farmers and workers and their families.”

- The aim of our Buy Local campaign is to help independent businesses survive the recession and encourage us all to go out and support local small shops, restaurants, pubs, markets and farm shops in the easiest way possible.
Remember we want to hear from you. Tell us why you like to buy local. Tell us about your favourite local business and why you use it.
