THE MINOR injuries unit at Malvern Community Hospital is now open.
The MIU, which will treat patients with cuts and bruises, minor burns, head injuries and fractured bones, opened on Monday.
The MIU will mean shorter trips for patients from the Malvern area who can receive treatment locally rather than making the long journey to the accident and emergency department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.
The MIU is on the site of the hospital’s former A&E department, which closed in 1992. It will open from 9am-9pm seven days a week and be staffed by a team of five nurse practitioners, who all have experience and training in acute care.
An MIU had always been earmarked as a key feature for Malvern’s new community hospital, due to open at Seaford Court next autumn.
The new service is being funded by Worcestershire Primary Care Trust but the League of Friends of Malvern Community Hospital is providing thousands of pounds worth of equipment, including trolleys, monitors and defibrillator machines.
