SIX members of Droitwich’s air cadet squadron have obtained their gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award after successfully completing all sections including a four-day expedition in the Lake District.
Cadet Sergeant Ashley Paul, former Cadet Sergeants Emma Handley and James Horton, together with former Cadet Warrant Officer Meg Wild, accompanied by proud parents, all attended St James’ Palace to meet the Duke of Edinburgh and to receive their awards.
Former Cadet Flight Sergeants Sean Dickinson and Chris Handley were unable to attend due to recently joining the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy respectively.
The group from Droitwich Squadron met Prince Philip, with Meg Wild having the opportunity to discuss her practice expedition journeys in the Belize jungle with him.
Following this, the gold award certificates were presented by Nigel Vardy, mountaineer and explorer, who also gave a speech, sharing his experiences and congratulating all present on their achievements.
Flying Officer Simon Smith RAF VR(T), the group’s award leader through their time on the scheme, who also accompanied them to the palace, said: “It was a pleasure to be there, see them all receive their certificates and to share in their moment of pride.
“We are very proud of them all at the squadron and wish those of them that have moved on to university and to the forces all the best for the future. They have set an excellent example to other cadets and to young people in general.”
