FEW people would dispute the need to have legally-defined measures when buying drinks in a pub or restaurant.

A pint of beer should be just that – and I’m glad to see there’s increasing uniformity with wine.

There’s nothing more infuriating than having to accept whatever the barman fancies serving you. I’d like to see this logic extended to food.

The other day I was given a ridiculously small amount for a top price and I felt cheated.

The fact that the grub was good was beside the point.

If you still feel hungry afterwards, then the point of the exercise has been defeated.

Apparently, this trend towards placing a tiny amount on a huge plate with a slash of brightlycoloured liquid covering the empty area of the utensil is called nouveau cuisine.

This is French for “we don’t give you very much.” I don’t see why a lack of protein shouldn’t have the compensation of a reasonable portion of vegetables. It’s hardly going to break the bank, is it?

And just think of the goodwill engendered as a result. They never know… you might even make a return visit.
