A FAMOUS Kidderminster music club is being celebrated with an exhibition of photographs.

Frank Freeman’s Dancing Club hosted some of the biggest rock acts of the 1960s, including Fleetwood Mac, Fairport Convention and Captain Beefheart.

The Mill Street club, now the site of La Brasserie restaurant, also attracted DJ John Peel, who regularly compered events there.

Kidderminster photographer Colin Hill has put together an exhibition of images he took of bands and audiences at the venue.

Mr Hill, who also attended Mr Freeman’s ballroom dancing lessons, said: “It was such an intimate place and was very special. John Peel said it was one of his favourite venues.”

Frank Freeman opened the dance school in 1948 and soon started putting on rock ’n’ roll groups on Sunday nights. From 1965, a regular mod night became popular in the area, before a young Robert Plant became friends with Mr Freeman and introduced “hippie” music to the venue.

The exhibition of 62 prints can be seen at Kidderminster Library Gallery in Market Street from Saturday until December 31.
