A MAN who stole perfume and sweets has been sent to jail.

Paul Griffin of Arboretum Road, Worcester, went into the city’s Boots store on Monday, November 10, and was seen by a member of staff filling a plastic bag with ladies’ fragrance worth £210.

When she confronted him, he ran out of the door and rode off on his bike.

When a security guard reviewed the CCTV footage, he was able to identify the 31-year-old, who nine days later was given a suspended sentence for the theft.

However, a few days after he appeared in court, he was seen going into the One Stop Shop in Lowesmoor, Worcester, where he picked up a box of Cadbury Roses and walking out of the shop along with the shopping basket.

In court, Griffin admitted the two counts of theft along with breaching his bail conditions.

The court had ordered him not to enter any retail premises other than the chemist to collect his methadone script. Originally, the court gave Griffin a three-month suspended sentence with a drug rehabilitation requirement for 12 months.

In mitigation, Rob Macrory said the theft in Boots had taken place before his suspended sentence, and the chocolate theft was after.

“He says it was a stupid and spontaneous thing to do. He didn’t think about it before he did it and it wasn’t of great value,” Mr Macrory said.

However, deputy district judge David Stott, who had previously sentenced him, sentenced Griffin to eight weeks’ custody.

“I hoped I made it quite clear that you were being given a chance at the last hearing when I gave you the suspended sentence,” he said.
