AN organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities urgently needs new volunteers. Malvern Hills Riding for the Disabled (RDA) group gives riding experience to teenagers and adults with learning and physical disabilities. The youngsters attend special schools in Worcester and riding lessons are a valuable part of their curriculum.

The group, which meets at Guinness Park Farm, Leigh Sinton, needs the help for its Monday and Wednesday sessions.

Peter Rickerby, chairman of the Malvern Hills RDA, has seen some astonishing results. He said: “It is amazing what these youngsters can achieve after a few months on horseback. Riding gives them confidence – especially if they are worried or nervous.

They have to concentrate while riding so it encourages them to focus. Also, they get plenty of physiotherapy as they have to do a lot of bending and twisting.”

The sessions enable people to improve their health and well-being, delivering a real and lasting therapy that not only benefits mobility and co-ordination but encourages confidence and self-worth while at the same time having fun.

Mr Rickerby said: “It took one youngster a year before he could hold the reins but when he did it was a joy to behold. It gave him and the helpers a tremendous boost to see what benefit these youngsters gain from being able to ride regularly.”

Helpers will be given instruction and training and while experience with horses is preferred, it is not mandatory. Trained instructors take the lesson.

Mr Rickerby said: “Ideally, we would like three helpers with each rider and the task would suit anyone who is retired or those who are flexible with their time. The classes take place during school time as they are part of the education curriculum.”

Malvern Hills RDA has recently raised more than £10,000 – £5,000 in the last 12 months thanks to some enthusiastic bucket rattling at Worcester racecourse, two summer lunches and a 12-mile fun ride.

Mr Rickerby added: “While we have been extremely successful at fund-raising, the challenge is not raising cash but in finding sufficient helpers to ensure these lessons are safely delivered.”
