AN opportunity that gave youngsters the chance to have their say on what they would do if they ran Wychavon District Council has been hailed a success.

Organisers said the children who attended Youth Summit 2008 were very forward-thinking.

The event gave the students the chance to have a say on the area in which they live and also asked them what they thought the big issues will be for Wychavon during the course of the next 20 years.

Concerns about the environment, recycling, number of volunteers, plans for more housing, and transport costs were all raised.

All of the thoughts and ideas from the day will now be explored and discussed at council meetings.

Outreach officer Robin Mace said: "The Youth Summit was a big success and all the students had a fantastic time. They enjoyed meeting the councillors and were amazed at the variety of career opportunities on offer at councils.

"They came up with some great ideas on how they would improve the area - most importantly how we can provide more youth activities and get them more involved in our work."

One of the ideas put forward at last year's event was a Youth Bus for Wychavon. This idea is now close to becoming a reality, as a bus has been purchased and will shortly be re-fitted to provide a safe, informal and engaging place for youngsters - particularly those in the villages - to meet friends and spend their evenings.
