A MAN more than twice the legal drink-drive limit crashed the car he was driving into a fence and telegraph pole, a court heard.
Fitzalbert Mendez said he had no recollection of the accident which did not involve any other vehicles.
The 49-year-old of Heath Drive, St Peter’s, Worcester, admitted a charge of driving a motor vehicle when above the legal alcohol limit when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court.
Marie Watton, prosecuting, said police officers were called out to a single vehicle crash on the A422 at North Piddle about 6.50pm on Saturday, August 1.
“When they arrived they saw a blue Renault Clio had collided with a fence and a British Telecom telegraph pole,” she said.
“The car was facing at a right angle on the carriageway.”
Miss Watton said officers saw Mendez stood at the side of the road.
“Speaking to him it became clear to officers he had been drinking because they could smell alcohol on his breath,” she said.
Miss Watton said Mendez took a breath test and lowest reading was 88mcg in 100ml breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.
“In interview Mendez had no recollection of what had happened,” she said.
District Judge Bruce Morgan said he was concerned about Mendez’s previous record, which had a number of motoring offences on it since the 1970s.
In mitigation Daniel Oscroft said it was more than 10 years since Mendez’s last conviction.
“This is a gentleman who has not been in trouble for some time in relation to excess alcohol,” he said. “These offences are all very old.
Mr Morgan said: “Yes, they are old and he’s carried on offending. He hasn’t learned anything.”
The case was adjourned until Thursday, December 18 so that a pre-sentence report can be prepared.
He was released on conditional bail until that date and an interim disqualification from driving was imposed.
