PUPILS have been finding out about the martyr drowned at sea for his faith who gave his name to their city church.
Youngsters at St Clement’s CE Primary School, in Henwick Road, also helped mark the 185th anniversary of St Clement’s Church on the opposite side of the road.
The church moved to its current site after flooding forced it away from its previous home in Dolday nearly two centuries ago.
Kate Brunt, headteacher, said: “We were asked by the church to design a bookmark so we asked pupils to tell us what St Clement’s Church meant to them.
“Years one and two also took part in a special assembly and the pupils have been learning more about the history, it’s been enjoyable.”
The winning bookmark was designed by 10-year-old Matias Faustino, pictured, in year six.
Pupils learned about St Clement who was the fourth Pope and died about 100 AD after the Romans tied him to an anchor and threw him into the Black Sea.
