PLANS to build a flood barrier in Pershore have progressed.
The merits of a permanent defence in Defford Road, which could cost up to £500,000 to build, were discussed by members of Worcestershire County Council, Wychavon District Council, and the Environment Agency at a meeting held by MP for West Worcestershire Sir Michael Spicer.
“The key event now will be a meeting of the Regional Defence Flood Committee on Wednesday, January 14 when, hopefully, the necessary additional funds will be allocated to the project,” said Sir Michael, who described the meeting as very productive.
“It is essential now that there should be maximum public support for the project and that the members of the committee should be aware of this.”
Sir Michael voiced hope that the barrier, if given a green light next year, would be complete by September 2009.
“In the interests of those in Pershore who have suffered badly from flooding in recent times I will do all that I can to make sure that the flood defence barrier is completed in time.” he said.
Designs for the barrier will go on display in Pershore on Friday, December 12.
