PUBLIC help is vital in tackling the “hidden crime” of domestic abuse, according to police.
West Mercia Constabulary is backing the international campaign, 16 Days of Action to End Violence Against Women, which runs until Wednesday, December 10.
The force is already running its Home Truths campaign, which highlights domestic abuse and lets victims and other people know how to report incidents anonymously through Crimestoppers.
Detective Sergeant Sharon Avery, of the force’s public protection unit, said: “Domestic abuse is largely a hidden crime. It is not discussed and the fear may be constant.
“We want people to work with us to report any incidents they have witnessed or suspicions they may have and remember, a prosecution can be pursued without evidence from the victim.”
She said Crimestoppers was an “invaluable” tool in reporting domestic violence anonymously.
South Worcestershire police division has specially trained staff who can deal with the issue and there are also specialist domestic abuse courts in locations across West Mercia, including Worcester.
Just over a third of all domestic violence incidents are ever reported – 35 per cent and about 15 per cent involve male victims.
To report a crime anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Alternatively, call the national domestic abuse helpline number on 0808 2000247.
