SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s is on target to open its new Worcester store in spring next year.
The major development has already changed the face of St John’s with a state-of-the-art sports centre, new youth centre, work on Christopher Whitehead Language College and better pedestrian links.
While there is more work to come, including a toucan crossing in Bransford Road, the imposing metal frame of the 26,000 sq ft store itself, off Swanpool Walk, has been completed and contractors from Bowmer & Kirkland will soon start to fit wall panels and flooring.
When the store opens, the ‘village in the city’, as St John’s is known. will have undergone a striking transformation.
Sainsbury’s project manager Gary Mudge said: “The development is really taking shape and we look forward to completing the construction work next year.
“Local residents have been very co-operative and I would like to thank them again for their patience throughout the programme of works.”
Councillor Margaret Layland, independent representative for the St John’s ward, said there are still mixed feelings about the arrival of the supermarket chain.
She said: “It’s always been 50/50. Some people want a supermarket because it will be competition for the Co-op and new blood coming in to St John’s, but not everyone feels that way.
“There has been upheaval with the roadworks, particularly for businesses that back onto Swanpool Walk.
“I just hope that it compliments the smaller stores and that loyal customers will keep using independent businesses. I’m also anxious that there is ample car parking space.”
As related roadworks continue throughout St John’s, drainage and resurfacing along Swanpool Walk and the Bransford Road junction have finished.
Anyone with questions about the St John’s development is invited to call Sue Bailey on the Sainsbury’s freephone number 0800 975 5299.
