MY first year as Worcester City manager has flown by.
I love managing the club and I have been made very welcome, I have had the backing of the board and fans and hopefully I will be here for a lot longer.
Apart from the last month it’s been very enjoyable. We haven’t produced any decent results in the last six games, which is disappointing, and we have to get back on track against Chelmsford on Saturday.
I know it’s a hard job, expectations at Worcester are high and my expectations are too and I want to be higher in the league than we are at the moment.
If we can get into the top eight then I would want to aim for the top five and if we were in the play-off positions I would want to push for the top.
Sometimes you fall short of expectation and that’s what I have got to assess a bit more. I want to do as well as I can as a manager. I always gave my all as a player am I am going to do the same as a manager.
I have been happy with lots of things in the past 12 months. When I took over I was a relatively unknown manager we went on a good run.
We were 1-0 down in my first game against Barrow at St George’s Lane, Chris Smith got sent off and we were looking at a heavy defeat.
Cameron Belford saved the resulting penalty and we went on to get a draw and never looked back for six games. It was the best start anybody could have asked for.
In the summer, I had no choice but to change the squad, otherwise players would have stayed. We got rid of a lot of good players like Smith, Adam Webster, Emeka Nwadike and Mark Danks who were more than good enough to take this league by storm. But the moves were enforced because of the finances and switching leagues.
I brought in some good players who did not hold the club to ransom in terms of money, they wanted to come and play for the club. A lot have still got jobs as well which is their main priority and this is their second job but they come and give it their all and the majority of time I can’t knock the lads.
Sometimes if you are not good enough to win games, your work-rate might get you something.
The work-rate was there against AFC Wimbledon at the weekend and that’s something I can’t criticise the lads for.
Meanwhile, Friday is a big day for the club but I want to keep away from it as much as possible.
I think the new chairman is focussed on getting more revenue into the club through the bar and things on the pitch at half-time which can only be good. for the club.
Finally, on the injury front, Graham Ward suffered a dead leg in training but I expect him to be fine to face Chelmsford.
Jemiah Richards missed the Wimbledon after feeling unwell during the warm-up.
I hope it is not a repeat of the virus we had in the camp a few weeks ago.
