ONE of the country’s top scientists dropped in at Nunnery Wood High School to speak to students about evolution.

Evolutionary geneticist Steve Jones spoke to pupils in the year 10 and 11 accelerate science groups, and also the year 11 top science group, about the bigger picture of science and where it belongs alongside everything.

Head boy Josh Hemming said: “Steve Jones started his talk by stating the importance of science.

“He said that the whole world revolves around physics and so do all sciences.

“When he spoke to us he didn’t create a new solution to insolvable problems but he gave the broad perspective of how humans began to inhabit the earth and make it home.”

Mr Jones told the pupils he had been highly influenced by scientist Charles Darwin.

“He was the writer of what Steve Jones referred to as the most important book in science ‘the Origin of Species’,” said Josh.

“When speaking he did not just wow everyone with his knowledge on this subject but used it to explain in a way everyone could understand and link to so that all pupils could go away with a better understanding of evolution and the reason that evolution has now stopped.”

After the talk pupils had a chance to ask questions.
