PARISHIONERS will be celebrating a church building’s anniversary 185 years after it was moved because of flooding.
St Clements Church, Worcester, moved across the river from Dolday to its current home in Henwick Road in 1823 after it kept being flooded by the river Severn.
The church is marking the anniversary following the end of a recent refurbishment to the current Georgian building.
Celebrations including displays by local businesses, a music concert and events at St Clements CE Primary School opposite will culminate with the saint’s day on Sunday, November 23.
Reverend Sherry Bloomer said: “St Clement was a pastor concerned with people as we are today.
“We felt it was the right time following the refurbishment and coinciding with the saint’s day to mark the anniversary and let people know we are here.”
A concert by soprano Maria Moll is being held from 7.30pm, on Saturday, and Lucy Hodgson, Worcester Mayor, will attend the Eucharist service at 10am on Sunday.
St Clement was the 4th Pope but was martyred by the Romans in the 2nd century after he was thrown into the Black Sea tied to an anchor.
He is the patron saint of lighthouses, lightships and blacksmiths.
