FLUFFY chickens will be helping pupils learn about caring for living things and helping sustain the world around them.
Youngsters at Red Hill CE Primary School, in Worcester, received six young chickens and six former battery-farmed chickens as part of their greener school ethos, on Tuesday.
Teachers have set up a chicken committee to oversee rearing, feeding and mucking out the birds which live in a secure coop on the sports field.
Pupils will join a rota taking turns to care for the chickens, with help from caretaker Julian Kenyon.
Karen Mann, project worker, said: “It’s one of those activities which children of all abilities and ages can take part in.
“Children from every class can have a go and their interest has been amazing. They’re very excited.”
She added the move was part of the school’s sustainable agenda teaching pupil about where food comes from.
It is hoped the chickens will begin laying eggs which will be sold to parents in the future.
