SCHOOLCHILDREN took to the streets to learn about Worcester’s fascinating past.

City education company Discover History took pupils from Cranham Primary School on a walking tour of the city on Monday, visiting historic hot spots and hearing about some of our famous visitors.

“Cranham Primary School have looked at the history surrounding their school and have now expanded to look at the city itself,” said Paul Harding of Discover History. “Worcester has seen all the great episodes in history; Mesolithic hunters, Romans, Vikings, the English Civil Wars and so on. It is a great place to study local history.”

The tour took in Worcester’s mediaeval walls, via the black and white King Charles House in Friar Street, from where King Charles II famously fled after he lost the Battle of Worcester in 1651.

The children also learnt about the city’s most famous resident, composer Sir Edward Elgar, and royal visitors King John, who is buried in Worcester Cathedral, and Elizabeth I, who once spoke to crowds of Worcester people from the balcony of a building that still stands in the Trinity.

Discover History’s guided tours run throughout the year and can be tailor-made to focus on specific eras such as the Civil War or Roman period.
