A BUILDING worker attacked a former schoolfriend in the toilets of a Worcester nightclub because of an incident which happened years earlier, a court was told.

Aaron Marston, accompanied by a friend, punched Wayne Tyrer on the jaw before hitting him on the head with a bottle. The friend joined in the attack.

Fortunately, the bottle did not break and there were no cuts, said Kerry Moreton, prosecuting at Worcester Crown Court.

Marston, 20, of Westminster Road, Ronkswood, Worcester, pleaded guilty to common assault and was sent to a young offenders' institution for 12 months.

This included a previous suspended sentence.

Miss Moreton said Marston was at Images nightclub on March 22 when he met up with Mr Tyrer. In a trial at magistrates court, Marston claimed he acted in self-defence.

Joe Kieran, defending, said Marston still did not accept his guilt although he had been convicted. He was normally a quiet man whose personality changed when he was drunk.

He had a stable family background and had formed a relationship with a young woman.

But Judge Andrew Geddes said it was an unpleasant attack fuelled by an incident from the past.
