I KNOW that the impact of the credit crunch and higher global oil prices is beginning to be felt on jobs. So it is more important than ever to do all we can to help people get back into work as quickly as possible and we have a system now that helps people get back into work.
It’s fair to say the crisis in the world economy has dominated business in the Commons.
Of course my constituency work – being out and about in Worcester, dealing with letters, e-mails and phone calls doesn’t stop.
But like you, it’s on all of our minds and is a real concern as this is about whether people can keep their homes, jobs and savings.
Every colleague I speak to has a view on what needs to be done.
Two weeks ago the Prime Minister came to speak to Labour MPs at our weekly meeting to tell us his plans for taking Worcester and Britain through the storm.
His message to us was clear.
Labour has to be prepared to take the difficult decisions to support our economy and help British families and businesses get through the tough times ahead.
I’m clear on where we stand – on the side of small business, homeowners, families, jobs and those with middle and modest incomes. I know people in our city are feeling worried.
The news about bank failures, global financial crisis and troubled stock markets across the world every day is a big concern.
You will have seen in the news that the Government has launched a major scheme designed to restore confidence in the banking system – a bold move to protect savers and rebuild confidence to help businesses, people and the economy.
This isn’t for the benefit of bankers, but for the ordinary savers, depositors, businesses and borrowers who depend on a properly functioning banking system. A healthy banking system is so important for the economy – we rely on it to lend to households and businesses.
So after working with the Bank of England and the Financial Services Authority, the Government announced that it is bringing in measures to ensure the stability of the financial system and to protect ordinary savers, depositors, businesses and borrowers.
The Labour Government acted to get lending started again and the economy moving forward.
If you have any concerns get in touch with me, but rest assured that I will be keeping you up to date on this vital issue.
