YET ANOTHER plea has gone out to motorists to observe the road markings and priorities on one of the busiest routes in and out Worcester.
Some drivers using the Powick roundabout are blocking the yellow box on the north side of the island, which aims to allow traffic to flow freely along the A449 from Lower Wick across the island towards Malvern and along the A4440 Hams Way towards Hereford and Bromyard.
The yellow box was painted on the roundabout where traffic from Lower Wick joins the island as part of the £750,000 Powick Bridge refurbishment completed this summer.
Councillor Derek Prodger, county council cabinet member for environment, said: “I have received a number of calls from people saying drivers are blocking the yellow box.
"I am concerned about it. We put the box there because local people we consulted over the roundabout wanted it.”
He said the traffic was slow moving through that area due to the roadworks and temporary traffic lights outside the Ketch Toby Carvery on the A38 where the county council is installing a toucan crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
“That is having an effect because there is a backlog of traffic. I would ask motorists to be patient and not to block the yellow box on Powick island.
"The toucan crossing work will finish next week and the resurfacing work on St Peter’s Drive will finish this week,” he added.
But there are more delays ahead for drivers heading towards Worcester on the A38 as the county council proposes to install another toucan crossing between the St Peter’s island and Acorns Children’s Hospice. Work is expected to start at the end of October.
Last month you Worcester News reported some motorists believed the green lights on the toucan crossing near Powick roundabout gave them right of way onto the roundabout. The county council is planning to provide more signs to clarify the priorities.
