McAYLA Johnston is clearly a real little battler. The 11-year-old was the victim of a terrible accident last month when she was knocked down on London Road in Worcester – just a day before she was due to start her first year at Nunnery Wood High School.

The youngster was in a coma for more than a week and continues to be treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital with parents Terri and David at her bedside.

McAyla’s recovery so far has been nothing short of miraculous. Terri and David had been warned she would need round-the-clock care for the rest of her life.

Now she is showing signs of improvement. She still has a long way to go but her parents tell us today just what a fighter she is.

Their courage also comes through in their words.

They have faced the kind of scene every parent dreads but are focusing on the positives in McAyla’s slow recovery. She has not spoken since the accident but Terri and David are sure she recognises them and is responding to them.

McAyla, her parents and sisters have been through a dreadful experience. We have no doubt there will be many tough times to come for her and them.

But she is alive and making progress – and is surrounded by love.

McAyla is obviously a vital part of a tight-knit family. They have our very best wishes for better times ahead.
