THE manager of a Worcester sandwich shop was pelted in the face with an egg, splitting her lip, as she walked home.

Alex Clarke is now hoping police will be able to catch the culprits on CCTV as they drove through St John’s. Mrs Clarke was walking home from the Berkeley Arms in School Road at about 9.40pm on Thursday, following an evening out playing bingo in the city.

“My sister dropped me off at the Berkeley Arms after bingo, where my husband was,” she said.

“I got there and decided I was tired and didn’t fancy a drink so I decided to walk home. It’s typical because I always drive normally as I don’t like walking on my own at night.”

As 44-year-old Mrs Clarke, the manager at Subway in St John’s, made the short walk back to her home in Abbey Road, she saw a white car approaching. “I didn’t think anything of it,” she said.

“But as it got close, the rear window was wound down and all of a sudden I was hit in the face with something.

“I put my hands up to my face and it was wet and I looked down and saw blood on my scarf and felt a huge pain in my jaw.”

Mrs Clarke had been hit in the face by an egg, believed to have been thrown from the car, splitting her lip.

“I rushed back to the pub and called my husband, Richard, and as soon as he saw me he went white,” she said. “He thought I had been punched by someone.

“I got cleaned up in the pub and a couple of the lads went out to see if they could see the car, or see what had hit me, as I didn’t know what it was at that time.”

The incident happened in Bransford Road, opposite The Crown public house.

Mrs Clarke, who has two children, Duncan, aged 20, and Fiona, 21, said she reported the incident to police, who were due to interview her yesterday afternoon. “I hope that they are able to get the CCTV from St John’s and maybe the car will be on there,” she said. “I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. If it had been a little old lady it could have knocked her over and done some real damage. Fortunately I’m quite strong, but it has been very painful and I have been really emotional.”

A spokesman for south Worcestershire police confirmed they were investigating the incident, which would include looking at available CCTV footage.
