GOLD medallist Zac Purchase returned to the town where his illustrious rowing career started to raise an Olympic flag in Upton today.
Sporting his Great Britain tracksuit with the gold medal hanging proudly from around his neck, Mr Purchase received a hero’s welcome as about 100 people, including swooning teenage girls and awe-struck young boys, clapped and cheered as he took part in the town’s second flag raising ceremony just after noon.
The Olympic flag raised at a previous ceremony had been stolen.
Twenty-two-year-old Mr Purchase, who started his rowing career in Worcestershire on the river Severn as a member of Upton Rowing Club in 1997, said he was overwhelmed by the reception he received but was relaxed enough to talk to young rowers aspiring to follow in his footsteps.
