PLANS for a battlefield trail could attract lottery funding, according to the city’s history experts.
Members of both Battle of Worcester Society, a volunteer organisation of enthusiasts, and Worcester City Council have been steadily working towards a trail incorporating the main locations from the city’s civil war-era heritage.
James Dinn, the city council’s archaeological officer, said a Heritage Lottery Fund bid could be drawn up by the end of the year, and if successful could pay for a full development study into the plan.
“I think lottery funding is what we would be looking for.
“The idea is we can agree on a bid plan by the end of the year.
“That would include research into the landscape and the city’s civil war history, including not only the battle of 1651, but the Battle of Powick Bridge and the sieges.”
He added a completed trail could incorporate The Commandery, in Sidbury, Fort Royal, and locations in Friar Street and New Street.
Dilip Sarkar, battle society founder member, agreed lottery money could provide the necessary funding and was keen to see a survey carried out.
He added: “We’ve always said there must be a survey of the entire site and part of that would have to be geo-phys.”
A partnership sub-committee meets on Wednesday, to further discuss the trail.
