THE future of red telephone boxes across Worcestershire - under threat of being disconnected and towed away - is still unclear.
The council said it had not yet received any correspondance about BT’s decision to offer local authorities the chance to adopt or sponsor a kiosk.
A spokeswoman said: “We haven’t been contacted about the removal of any of our phone boxes so until we hear something we can’t say anything.”
We previously reported in your Worcester News how BT decided to give councils the opportunity to adopt a disused kiosk for a one-off payment of £1 or pay £500 every year to help maintain a full public payphone service after it received vociferous opposition from residents and councillors to its plans to remove those boxes across the UK that were not making enough money.
Herefordshire Council has already said it would cost more than £50,000 taxpayers’ money to save all of its kiosks under-threat and it has written to all parish councils about the threat. It is now in the process of compiling a submission to BT.
BT said it would not disconnect or remove any more phone boxes between now and the closing date for adoption or sponsorship applications on Wednesday, October 1.
