OLYMPIC gold medal winners and world record breakers will pass through Worcester as part of a national cycling competition.

After success in the Beijing Games team pursuit event yesterday, Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas are riding in the Tour of Britain.

Wiggins, aged 28, added to his individual pursuit gold at the velodrome with the team event win.

Thomas was also a member of the pursuit team which not only won but twice broke the world record, posting a world-beating time of 3:53.314 and beating their Danish competitors by more than six seconds in the final.

The pair will swap their Team GB bodysuits for the colours of their respective teams, Team Columbia and Barloworld, when the tour makes it way to the city on Wednesday, September 10.

There will be no room for pleasantries as the 96 competitors tackle the tour’s fourth stage out of eight, riding off from Worcester Racecourse and finishing 96 miles (156 km) further north in Stoke-on-Trent.

Worcester spectators can also cheer on fellow British medal-winner Chris Newton – riding for Rapha-Condor-Recycling.co.uk – who took bronze in the points race event at the Olympics over the weekend.
