A HORTICULTURAL society in Worcestershire is celebrating its diamond anniversary this month.

The Droitwich Spa and District Horticultural Society will mark its 60th birthday at its annual flower show on Bank Holiday Monday.

Val Jancey, secretary for the society, said the show regularly attracted hundreds of visitors.

“The public will be treated to grand displays of flowers, fruit, vegetables, cakes and preserves, handicrafts, floral art, photography and children‘s classes in the main exhibition hall,” she said.

“On this very special event in the society’s history there will be an appearance by antiques expert and television personality Henry Sandon, who will officially open the show, accompanied by his wife Barbara.

“A donation will be made to Barbara’s charity, the children’s bereavement charity the Noah’s Ark Trust, as a thank you for their attendance.”

The show takes place at the town’s sports and leisure centre from 1pm.

Away from the exhibition hall, attractions include a puppet theatre, a garden exhibit by Hardys Design Group, a young firefighters group, fairground organ, face-painting, land army display and much more, including a tombola, raffle and a variety of stalls.

The society was founded by members Geoff Amos, George Crump, Harold Hatfield, Jim Holt, Berrill Inett and Hector Tulett.

Horace Workman, a committee member, is a nephew of founder member Jim Holt.

Events organised for members include spring, summer, autumn and annual flower shows, trips to gardens of interest and social evenings.
