ELABORATE tapestries housed in Worcester have been given a new lease of life.

The delicate collection of wall hangings and textiles at The Greyfriars, Friar Street, Worcester, have been cleaned and repaired by expert Victoria Allen, who spent two weeks at the timber-framed merchant’s house.

Last month, visitors to The Greyfriars took part in a textile day. They learned about the historic National Trust-owned collection and watched cleaning demonstrations. A mediaeval re-enactor was also on hand to talk about dying and weaving cloth.

Rachel Bannon, house custodian, said: “We have four tapestries and various delicate textiles.

“Victoria Allen was here for two weeks to very carefully clean and repair them. She spent four days on one piece of 17th-century Italian silk.”

The black and white building, built in 1480, was home to some of the most influential merchant families in Worcester. It was rescued from demolition during the 20th century and is now open to the public daily.
