SOME of the region’s finest artists will exhibit work along Worcester’s riverside this weekend.
The hugely popular Riverside Artists’ Market at South Quay has returned as part of the Worcester Festival and looks set to bring a continental feel to the city’s river promenade.
A record number of artists – more than 40 – are taking part by exhibiting paintings, prints and photographs every Sunday.
It is a chance for up and coming artists to promote themselves and for art lovers to buy original pieces. Organiser Miriam Harvey became involved “quite by accident” about six years ago.
“There was a market about 10 years ago, before the festival existed, which was part of a tourism group,” said Mrs Harvey.
“I happened to be a green badge tour guide and found myself with the job of organising the market after a colleague left to have a family.
“So it was quite by accident that I got involved in the event but now I am fully committed.”
This year, well-known watercolour artist Craig Letourneau who has a gallery and studio in Worcester is running a children’s competition, open to youngsters of all ages.
There will also be live jazz bands playing by the South Quay fountains.
“Each year it grows,” said Mrs Harvey.
“Artists tell friends, who tell their friends, and more people come along. It’s really exciting.
“For many artists it is their first opportunity to exhibit in public.”
The Riverside Artists’ Market will be open from 11am to 5pm every Sunday until the end of the Worcester Festival.
