Blimey what a storm !
I was out and about in the People’s Republic of Martley on Tuesday evening when the rain came. Now I am not saying I am any great age – thanks for all the birthday cards by the way – but I have never seen anything like it.
Roads that don’t flood were flooded and it took me ages to get home. I am told that parts of the village looked like Weston beach with all the sandstone that had been washed down, and the sea was probably as close as it is some days at Weston.
Talking of the seaside, we were in Durham last weekend, and I love that coast up there. The bit above Newcastle up to the Scottish border is spectacular, and it’s very much a county of variations, I always think, with the coast and the seaside and the cliffs and then a few miles inland the old mining towns. Indeed, some of the mines used to run out under the seas for miles, I believe.
And talking of the coast, there are some things the BBC do better than others but I thoroughly enjoy Coast the programme.
If you’ve never seen it then take a look next time, as it follows the coast, honest, around Britain and comes up with tales of things that have happened in the past, and are happening now.
I note this week that there are plans to make the coast accessible for everyone, everywhere, which must set the alarms bells ringing with the rescue services, as it’ll be them who have to get folk off the cliffs when they get stuck.
All very exiting this week with the start of Twenty20 cricket and the County have four games at home, starting against Warwickshire next Wednesday.
Hands up, I must say when the idea was first mooted, I didn’t think much of it.
Mark Newton, at New Road, was very much in favour of it and I do recall saying it would just be evening league cricket. But I am happy to admit I was wrong and it’s brought a whole new crowd into the game, and the players thoroughly enjoy it.
Big rugby news this week, of course, with Rico Gear coming to Sixways. I’m told he’s almost as good as Nick Baxter in his heyday! Nick Baxter told me that, by the way.
Talking of TV, I caught a bit of a programme this week about the trawlermen fishing in the North Sea. Now there’s a way to earn a living, they could have cast their nets in Martley on Tuesday!
