I am currently working with a client who has a responsible job and puts his heart and soul into it. He works long hours for little or no thanks. He is trying to build a career in retail as a manager and is on this retailers trainee manager program. The perception most people have of others they meet for the first time is mostly derived from what is first spoken and initial appearances - two fairly superficial things. We form long held opinions on people based on our initial contact. So as a trainee manager what did people think of my client?
People's initial contact with my client were through work, and new him when he was an hourly paid colleague. He is known as a hard worker and does an honest days work. He is always polite and fairly easy going.
What people have no idea about is what makes him tick? What motivates him? Why does he make certain decisions? Any clients I work with fill out a questionnaire before we commence to allow me to get some background info on him or her.
Peoples confidence is at the heart of how they act, interract and is given away in their body language even more than their speech.
So what advice do i give clients? Well - in short NONE! People often have a very good idea of what they need to do, they just need a tip in the right direction from somebody asking the right questions at the right time. Confidence is a tricky area - but one that most of us wish we had more of in certain situations .. whether a belief that we cannot reverse park, we cant present or do public speaking, or never know what to say to the opposite sex (believe me you are not alone in that one!)
In my next blog - top tips to increase your confidence.
Bye for now
