IT has been a week of highlights as Christmas approaches and the carol service season gets into full swing. Joan and I enjoy all the services but there is one that really stands out for us, the Manor Park School carol service in St Clement’s Church. The youngsters were brilliant – Melissa and Katie leading the choir, Justine singing a solo version of Away In A Manger. She has a lovely voice which filled the church. Plus, of course, Dan, Gemma and the others who make the visits so much fun.
Joan and I also attended the King’s School service in the cathedral. Any cathedral service is special and this was the first of the Christmas services. There was some wonderful singing from the school choir and the chance to sing those beloved carols we all enjoy. I bumped into Mr Thompson again who is clearly enjoying his retirement.
We also went to a service in County Hall. Fine music once again, this time performed by Bishop Perowne orchestra and choir and the choir from St Barnabas Primary School.
The theme continued with a trip to St George’s Catholic Primary to see their infant nativity play. Considering their ages, all under eight, they were word-perfect. A lot of rehearsal there and bags of ‘aah’ factor as they were so serious in the presentation. It hasn’t all been carol services however. I presented awards to students from the Technology College’s Acquired Brain Injury programme. They have overcome some horrendous problems and to see the delight in coming into the Guildhall for the awards was very humbling.
Back to Christmas and a trip to the Community Centre in Midland Road for the children’s party. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The bad news – there is an allegation of me cheating at musical chairs. I deny it and even if it’s true I didn’t win!
I spent two nights running in the Countess of Huntingdon Hall, but for very different events – the Soroptimists and Malvern Hills Brass Band. Both organisations hosted charity concerts and very enjoyable they were. I particularly enjoyed the Hanley Castle High School Band. Such talent!
Finally, a Christmas quiz. Which well-known local personality once played in a German oompah band under the professional name of Big Willy? Answer after Christmas.
Finally from Joan and I, a very happy Christmas to you all, we hope it is peaceful and enjoyable.
