England are ahead on points - but only just - after an absorbing first day's play in front of a record WACA crowd of 24,268. Despite losing the toss, England bowled and fielded very well to restrict Australia to just 244.

The highlight of the day was undoubtably Monty Panersar's exuberent celebrations after bowling Justin Langer just before lunch. A lap of honour around the playing area was only stopped by a bear hug from Captain Flintoff but showed how much it meant to Monty to be playing. His final analysis of 5-92 was the best ever by a spinner at the WACA and was well deserved.

Let's not forget the return to form for Steve Harmison who bowled with real aggression, particularly at Glenn Mcgrath!

A specially minted coin is being used for the toss at each Test match and is then being auctioned for charity. Bids can be made on www.lgm.com.au. The coin for the first Test Match raised A$5,000 and the coin for the second test Match raised A$8,000. Now there's an idea for our Commercial Department!

I met up with Daryl Mitchell, Steve Davies and Will Gifford at the match. Daryl has scored two centuries for Midland Guildford CC in recent weeks and has asked me to let our Fitness guru, Dave Lowe, know that he "has surprised himself and is keeping up with his winter fitness programme"! Steve davies is with the National Academy and will be back before Christmas but is clearly enjoying himself. Will has come over for a five week holiday and will be encouraging Daryl to keep up his fitness regime!

All were in very good spirits which is not surprising given the fantastic weather and top class facilities available out here. Oh to be a young athlete in this day and age!

Monty was the hero yesterday. Who will be England's hero today if the Barmy Army's chant "We're going to win 3-2" is to be realised?
