One of my main concerns when meeting a man for the first time, is of course my personal safety. Two kids and a mortgage etc, you just can't be too careful in today's world!
I always make sure that a friend knows exactly where I am meeting, and get them to call me within the first half hour to make sure that I am OK. We have a code that we use if he seems a little dodgy and the I call them when the meeting is over and I'm safe.
Most men have no problem with this and give me their address etc just to make me feel more comfortable etc. You can imagine my shock when yesterday I was accused of going to these 'extremes'(his words) because of his nationality by a Libyan man.
We'll call him Mo for the sake of international relations. I had been talking to Mo for a few months, we exchanged pictures and texts daily and got to the stage when we knew quite alot about each other. We decided to meet for lunch in the City and see how things went. Anyway just before the meal arrived, I had my usual call to make sure all was well.
I answered as normal and reassured my friend that all was ok. Mo seemed to be a nice man, well mannered and worth getting to know as a friend. I had already decided he wasn't for me in a romantic sense but we can never have enough friends. There was no 'spark', and at my age I want it all! (Don't we all?)
After the call I told Mo about my safety call and couldn't believe his response. He was very angry and accused me of various things, but mainly of being racist. He was shouting at me in the middle of the restautant. "Would I do this if he was white?". I have to admit at this stage I wish I'd kept my mouth shut, but that's never been my strong point!. I tried to tell him that this had nothing to do with his nationality but his sex, he's a man!, but he was livid. People were starting to watch and I just wanted to hide under the table.
Where did i go wrong? Is honesty to be side stepped for political correctness, even for personal safety? Should I have kept my mouth shut? I can honestly say, hand on heart that I do this with every man I meet for the first and second time, if it gets that far.
My own safety is paramount but he had blinkers on, which was sad to see.
Suffice to say I went home hungry and very thoughtful. I did question myself but I won't be changing the way I do things, and I knew that I had made the right decision not to see him again.
Guys out there, if you are going on a first date and the lady you are meeting wants your telephone number or address or even your inside leg measurements, my advice is to give it. She needs to feel safe meeting you and if you have nothing to hide you won't have a problem with this.
And girls if it is hard to get this information out of him or you have doubts whatsovever DON'T GO.
