CONCERNS have grown about the 'constant, decade-long' flooding issue which makes a busy city road 'impassable.'

Councillors have called on Worcestershire County Council to allocate money to repair a collapsed drain on Midland Road, which is causing a flood on the road after many downpours, in next year's budget.

This issue was highlighted again after Storm Bert wreaked havoc across the county, with a section of Midland Road, near the junction with Newtown Road, being partially flooded through to Wednesday this week.

Worcester City Council leader Cllr Lynn Denham, and deputy leader Cllr Jabba Riaz, are lobbying the county council to include funds to a collapsed drain in next year's budget.

Cllr Riaz claimed that flooding had been an issue for at least a decade.

He added last year, a survey revealed there was a collapsed drain that needed repairing.

Cllr Riaz further claimed the repairs required a substantial amount of money and permissions, but the county council hasn’t been willing to allocate the funds and time needed this year due to budget cuts.

Cllr Riaz said: "It floods whenever there is a moderate amount of rainfall never mind the recent storm.

"The road becomes impassable for pedestrians on one or both sides.

"We have constantly reminded highways and the county council of this being a key route for commuters and pedestrians.

"Lynn Denham and I are working with the county council who have tried to do temporary fixes and regular cleans but haven’t been able to sort the issue.

"Last year we finally managed to get a breakthrough and get them to do a proper survey and assessment.

"It was found that there is a collapsed drain that needs repairing and it requires a substantial amount of money and permissions, resources and time they haven’t been willing to allocate this year due to budget cuts.

"We are fighting and lobbying that they allocate this money for the coming financial year to ensure that this long-standing issue gets resolved and the money allocated for a permanent fix."

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “We recognise residents’ frustrations regarding the flooding on Midland Road.

"We can confirm improving the current flooding situation in this area is on our radar and are continuing to engage with the local County Councillor to consider a scheme.”
