AN arrest has been made after 'suspicious activity' led to the discovery of cannabis plants in a flat above a chip shop.

Police were called to a property above Newtown Takeaway on Ronkswood Hill on Thursday morning (November 28) after reports of suspicious activity at the address.

A man in his 30s was then arrested on suspicion of cannabis production and is helping police with their enquiries.

Officers were called to the scene at around 10.45am, with a startled chip shop worker arriving around an hour later to find police at the scene.

He said: “I opened at 11.45am and there were loads of police here.

“I am unaware of what is happening at all and this is not connected to the shop."

The owner of the chippy said it was "bad what was happening" and added there was no place for any crime in the community.

Three officers were initially at the scene, while a National Grid van and two more police vehicles were quick to join.

Officers at the scene were quick to assure people there was no risk to the wider community, however, a scene guard remained in place following the arrest.

The owner of Newtown Road Motors, which is next door to the Chippy, Lee Jordan, told the Worcester News: “I haven’t got a clue what is going on, I’ve just been on a job doing an MOT and saw a load of police flying through Tolladine on my way back.

“The flat is separate from the chippy.

“I haven’t seen anything happening in the flat but we are out of here from 5pm.

“As far as I know the flat has been empty for about six months.”

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of suspicious activity at an address above a chip shop on Newtown Road, Worcester this morning at around 10.45am.

“Upon entering the premises, officers discovered approximately 20 cannabis plants.
