THOUSANDS of dissatisfied people in Worcester have joined a rapidly growing petition calling for Labour to call another general election.

A petition on the UK government website calling for a general election gained over 2,600,000 signatures within days, including 3,791 from Worcester.

But Worcester's Labour MP, Tom Collins, has hit back at the criticism, insisting his party was focused on fixing the foundations of the country.

So far, around 3.645 per cent of Mr Collins' constituency, which voted for him in July after more than a decade with Conservative Robin Walker, have now called for a general election.

Labour has been slammed for its recent decisions in the budget, including rises to national insurance and extension of inheritance tax to include farms.

The petition claimed the government has gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead-up to the last election, which saw Labour sweep the Conservatives out of power in a landslide win.

Mr Collins told the Worcester News: "This Labour government inherited a £22 billion black hole in our public finances.

"People are right to expect an apology from the Conservatives for crashing the economy and running our public services into the ground.

"We’re focused on fixing the foundations of the country, investing in our NHS, schools and the public services that we all rely on here in Worcester.

"Our budget’s purpose is to drive growth and investment into the UK by restoring economic stability.

"Rural communities need our public services – whether that’s improvements to our roads, better transport links or access to health services.

"The new budget is delivering these, alongside key investments in British farming.

"If local people have specific concerns, then I encourage them to get in touch with my office."

Mr Collins added he had been in touch with farmers in Worcester and understood their concerns and the pressures farming communities are facing.

In neighbouring West Worcestershire, 5,474 people have signed the petition calling for an election, around 5.649 per cent of the population.

Neighbouring West Worcestershire's Conservative MP, Dame Harriett Baldwin, said it was clear to many voters that the Government was on the wrong path- but stopped short of calling for another general election just five months after her party's big defeat.

She added: “It is clear to me and many voters that the Government is on the wrong path, and this is not the change that people voted for when they entered the polling booths in July."
