A Worcester vets has joined an initiative supporting employees with endometriosis.

Brentknoll Veterinary Centre, in Whittington Road, has been named an "Endometriosis Friendly Employer" (EFE) by Endometriosis UK.

The initiative supports sufferers of the chronic condition, which affects an estimated 1.5 million women in the UK.

Endometriosis causes cells similar to the lining of the womb to grow outside the uterus, causing severe pain and complications.

Brentknoll's deputy practice manager, Jo Lines, is affected by the condition.

Ms Lines said: "We are extremely proud to have joined this initiative.

"I really wanted us to join this scheme as it allows those affected by the disease to have the confidence to speak up when they are struggling and know that we will do what we can to support them.

"We are very lucky here to have a supportive management team and they jumped at the chance to join the scheme.

"Personally, I’m passionate about squashing the taboos around many women’s health topics, especially menstrual health, as it is something every woman, and those assigned as female at birth, go through and they shouldn't be afraid or embarrassed about talking about and asking for help.

"I have been diagnosed with endometriosis now for 10 years and started suffering with symptoms just over 20 years ago, so it is a topic I am extremely familiar with and one in which I want to raise awareness."

Endometriosis UK offers several support channels for sufferers and encourages organisations to join the EFE scheme.

Emma Cox, Endometriosis UK CEO, said: "By joining the scheme, employers have made a commitment to creating a supportive working environment and culture for those affected by endometriosis and menstrual health conditions."

There is currently no cure for endometriosis, which affects 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth from puberty to menopause, although the impact may be felt for life.
