A Worcester under-11 girls' hockey team has been crowned national champions.

RGS The Grange's team won the IAPS National Hockey Championship 2024 after a 'remarkable' performance at the national finals last Friday.

The team impressed throughout the competition, excelling in the regional competition two weeks ago, before making their way through the pool stages, quarter-finals, and semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, the team faced St Michael's Prep School, the reigning national champions from 2022 and 2023.

The girls secured victory through extra time and penalty flicks, before achieving a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Clifton College in the final.

Headmaster Gareth Hughes said: "This victory is a reflection of the dedication and commitment these girls have shown in training and the years of teamwork that have brought them to this point.

"Their success is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through hard work and resilience.

"We are immensely proud of their accomplishment, which has brought such pride to the school community."

The team was guided by coaches Mr Pegg and Mrs Warne, with support from RGS Worcester hockey coach, Mr Gerrish.

Former RGS The Grange and RGS Worcester pupil, Alice Atkinson, now an England under-23 hockey player, shared an inspiring message with the girls before the tournament, motivating them to aim high.

Ms Atkinson was part of the Grange team crowned IAPS National Champions in 2015.

The school said this national win represents a proud achievement in RGS The Grange’s sporting history and celebrates the talent and determination of its young athletes.
