A Worcester secondary school has received national recognition for its commitment to learning outside the classroom.

Nunnery Wood High School has been awarded the Gold LOtC (Learning Outside the Classroom) Mark by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom.

Assistant headteacher, Mike Haines, said: "Being awarded the Gold LOtC Mark is a fantastic achievement for all the staff here as it shows that we have really put in the work to ensure our students have access to vital opportunities to learn outside the classroom.

"We're thrilled to get official recognition for our efforts, and we look forward to continuing to embed LOtC within our school curriculum to help more students achieve their potential."

The LOtC Mark is a recognition given by the council, a UK charity that advocates for education outside the traditional classroom setting.

The council supports educators, schools, and organisations providing children with transformative learning experiences beyond their usual learning environment.

These experiences could take place indoors or outdoors, close to home, or in faraway places.

The council believes that learning outside the classroom can broaden students' perspectives and foster their development into well-rounded citizens.

The advantages of LOtC have been well-documented, including improvements in academic performance, physical health, emotional well-being, self-esteem, and resilience.

Dr Anne Hunt, chief executive of the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, said: "Learning outside the classroom has many proven educational benefits as well as providing some of the most memorable experiences in a child’s school life.

"Achieving the Gold LOtC Mark demonstrates that Nunnery Wood High School is committed to developing and delivering genuinely valuable learning outside the classroom experiences for their children and young people and I congratulate them on achieving this award."

The school has said it plans to continue incorporating LOtC into its curriculum to help more students reach their potential.
