HUGE amounts of debris including large piles of driftwood are piled against Worcester's main bridge, left there by floodwater when the river burst its banks.

A photo shows the scale of the debris stacked against the main bridge between the city centre and St John's in Worcester.

One resident said: "Look at the state of the river by the bridge. When are they going to clean it up?"

A spokesperson for the Canal and River Trust, which are leading on the clear-up, said: "Our team is working with the local council on beginning the process of removing the debris from Worcester Bridge but can only do so when it’s safe for us to begin operations because of the high and rising river levels on the River Severn. Safety of our team has to be the main priority when we are looking to undertake these works."

Worcestershire was hit by flooding in October. Flood alerts along the River Severn and River Avon were removed on October 24, bringing an end to Worcester's most recent flooding episode.

However, heavy rainfall which saw the Severn burst its banks in South Quay, Worcester, also left large amounts of debris against the side of the bridge.
