A dinner in Worcester has raised more than £10,000 for charity in a night bringing together the communities of Worcestershire and China.

The event, held at College Hall, was in aid of the Museum of Royal Worcester, the Worcestershire Chinese Association, and educational charity Engage with China.

It was attended by 100 guests, who were entertained by porcelain experts and learned about the link between Worcester and Jingdezhen, the birthplace of porcelain in China.

The event also included an auction of prizes donated by organisations and friends, including a Qing dynasty plate donated by Jian Jun Xi, an export porcelain collector and artist.

Mr Xi said: "I was fascinated by the number of people from Worcester who attended the event.

"I was also deeply impressed to learn about Dr John Wall and the Museum of Royal Worcester, which showcases the high-quality porcelain production pioneered in England."

He added: "I would love to see Jingdezhen and Worcester come together to celebrate the shared history and craftsmanship of these two cities, both renowned for their porcelain-making traditions."

H-J Colston-Inge, director of Engage with China, said: "My husband, John, (the recently retired Bishop of Worcester), and I were inspired by Jingdezhen when we visited it last year and saw the very place where porcelain production started.

"We also had the privilege of having a private audience with King Charles on Wednesday this week where we saw cabinets of porcelain at Buckingham Palace and, without being able to turn the porcelain upside down, I couldn’t help but imagine that many of the collections in the Royal Palace were of Royal Worcester and maybe export porcelain from China.

"Without knowing it, as we drink tea and eat off our dinner services, we have china on our lips and in our guts.

"We are deeply and culturally connected without fully appreciating it."

The event raised more than £10,000 to support the work of the partner organisations.

It is hoped that the cultural conversations and optimism at the dinner will echo around the corridors of power at the closing stages of the G20 summit.
