A NAUTICAL themed pub in the heart of Worcester with a new cocktail bar and roof terrace is celebrating its first year in the city with a party and a special offer on drinks.

The Cocky Anchor in Broad Street, Worcester celebrates its first birthday this Thursday with a 10 per cent off drinks offer after the maritime pub made waves since it opened a year ago.

Pub manager Matt Dainty said: "Our first year has been amazing. We have had a lot going on in our first year, from our initial opening, to the release of Anchor Storm in collaboration with Bewdley brewery, to the opening of our cocktail bar and roof terrace back in the summer.

"We are looking forward to many more years to come serving all of our customers, and we have got a lot more to come in the future so watch this space."

The watering hole is in the historic Grade II listed building on Broad Street, which used to house Phone Guru and is opposite Wetherspoons.

It opened on November 21 last year.

The building has been completely restored and transformed, with the main bar on the ground floor and an orangery with a retracting glass roof to the rear.

Owner Ian Paxton has the sea in his blood - one of his ancestors, working as a cooper, served on HMS Victory (Lord Nelson's flagship) and his wife also served with the Royal Navy.

The beer on sale is Anchor Ale, brewed specially for the Cocky Anchor by Flack's based in Romsey where her sister pub is also based.

On the ground floor is an orangery where the builders have created a retracting glass roof which can open in the summer, forming a sort of courtyard.

However, possibly the most distinctive feature is the humorous 'clock bogs' - toilets with grandfather clocks. To flush in the gents simply use the old carriage lamp. To flush in the ladies, push the button on the barometer.

The distinctive painted heads on the exterior are believed to be a merchant, a soldier and a cleric but there is some suggestion one of the heads might be that of a rabbi.

Part of the building (the cupola) may have been a synagogue or was described as such by locals because it resembled one.

The 18th century Cupola Suite under the dome is available to hire out for functions. The blue room is also rentable for conferences.
